With the much-anticipated release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, fans have been eagerly waiting for news about any potential DLC. Given that Final Fantasy 7 Remake offered additional content during the interlude before its sequel, it was natural to expect something similar. However, fans will be left without any DLC this time around. In a frank conversation with the Daily Star, director Naoki Hamaguchi cleared up the speculation, confirming there won’t be any extra downloadable content for Rebirth.
Hamaguchi acknowledged the clamoring from fans for DLC, stating, “We definitely do hear the desire from fans, the voices out there that want that kind of thing. I understand it completely.” But he also expressed his belief that what fans truly desire is not additional episodes but a swift release of the series’ third installment. “From my perspective, what the fans really want to see the most is not necessarily DLC. They want to see the third part of the series as quickly as possible,” he explained.
To achieve this, the development team has chosen to dedicate all their resources to ensuring the next chapter is delivered promptly. “So that’s why we’ve decided not to focus the development resources on creating additional extra episodes for DLC at the moment. We really are putting all our efforts into getting the third game out as quickly as we can,” Hamaguchi shared. It’s a decision that certainly makes sense given the fans’ desires.
While the Yuffie DLC proved to be a nice bridge between games, it leaves one wondering about the potential for solo adventures featuring characters like Cid or Vincent Valentine. For Vincent in particular, there’s speculation that Square Enix might have something up their sleeves, like a potential Dirge of Cerberus remaster, akin to what they did with Crisis Core: Reunion. So for those fans holding out hope, keep your fingers crossed!
My colleague Dom also caught up with Hamaguchi earlier this week to discuss the future of mini-games in the series’ last chapter. Don’t worry, the director has plans to freshen things up. It’s exciting to think about what new elements could be introduced to enhance the gameplay experience as the saga unfolds.
