Warning: Major Spoilers for Final Fantasy VII
Nintendo Switch players can now rejoice over an updated version of the iconic PS1 JRPG, Final Fantasy VII, which has just removed the restriction on capturing screens during some critical scenes.
For those not in the know, Switch gamers have the handy ability to grab screenshots or record short video snippets—up to 30 seconds—using the capture button on their controllers. These can then be easily shared on social media or downloaded to mobile devices.
While some Switch titles, like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, don’t offer the video capture option at all, others, such as Persona 5 Royal, lock both screenshot and video functionalities during key story segments.
Final Fantasy VII fell into this category, specifically during one of its most talked-about moments:
The scene in question is the tragic demise of Aerith. Her death at Sephiroth’s hands triggers the unfolding drama of Disc 2, as Cloud and his team push forward without her support.
Initially, players couldn’t capture any of the cutscenes during her poignant exit and the conclusion of Disc 1. But with the latest update, version 1.03, that restriction is history.
This change isn’t exclusive to the Switch; similar limitations on other platforms have also been lifted.
While the exact reason for this change hasn’t been fully disclosed, it might relate to the recent launch of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth earlier this year.
