Orion Drift, developed by the creators of Gorilla Tag, just received its first significant update since launching on early access last month. The update introduces a fresh mini-game, ‘Capture the Beacon’ (CTB), to its expansive space station.
In CTB, players aim to transport a rod-shaped beacon back to their team’s base, reminiscent of capture the flag. The exciting twist? There’s no cap on the number of participants, nor is there a time limit, so anyone can hop into the game whenever they please.
The studio mentioned there’s a lot more packed into this update, though they’ve kept the specifics under wraps. We’ll get to see these new features when the update goes live tomorrow, March 28th, at 10 AM PT.
Launched for free as an early access title on Quest in late February, Orion Drift carries over Gorilla Tag’s unique movement style, allowing players to move through the space station by physically swinging their arms, pushing themselves forward in zero gravity.
Besides CTB, the game already offers several activities. Its highlight, ‘Drift Ball,’ acts as a spiritual successor to Echo VR, resembling a handball game set in low-gravity conditions. The space station also hosts various other mini-games, like parkour areas for climbing enthusiasts, Drift Ball practice arenas, and small games of golf and basketball. There are even lounges where spectators can enjoy live matches happening across different arenas.
Currently, Orion Drift can host up to 75 players per server. However, Another Axiom aims to push that limit to 200. Enhancing the variety of mini-games is a positive step in that direction, although it’s still early days for this evolving game.
While Orion Drift adopts Gorilla Tag’s successful formula of engaging, easy-to-join social experiences, it hasn’t quite achieved the same viral traction. As of now, the free game has amassed around 3,300 user reviews. It also hasn’t cracked the top 50 best-selling games on Quest. The top three spots belong to Animal Company, Yeeps, and, unsurprisingly, Gorilla Tag itself.
