April 18, 2025, marked the kickoff of the Star Wars Celebration in Japan, igniting a buzz with numerous announcements focused on both upcoming and classic Star Wars titles. Among the exciting updates, Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws stood out with its much-anticipated second story expansion, A Pirate’s Fortune, set to release on May 15. This expansion throws players back into the adventurous shoes of the savvy thief Kay Vess. Teaming up with her accomplices, Nix and ND-5, Kay is on a quest to unearth a treasure hidden within the mysterious Khepi Tomb. However, standing in their way is the fierce Stinger Tash and her notorious Rokana Raiders. To spice things up, the infamous but unpredictably charming pirate, Captain Hondo Ohnaka, lends his somewhat dubious support to Kay and her crew.
For fans of Star Wars who are more familiar with movie characters, Hondo Ohnaka might seem like just another colorful personality in the galaxy. But in reality, Ohnaka is no newbie; he has been a staple in the Star Wars universe, appearing in TV series, books, and comics, and even taking part in Disney’s Galaxy’s Edge attraction. Introduced in 2009’s debut season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Ohnaka initially led a pirate gang on Florrum, dealing in spice and illegal arms. His introduction saw him cleverly capturing Jedi legends Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker alongside Sith Lord Count Dooku, planning to hold them for ransom.
Despite setbacks, like having his plans thwarted by Jar Jar Binks of all people, Ohnaka maintained his place in the saga, forming unexpected alliances and fending off powerful enemies like Sith Maul and General Grievous. Through his arcs, viewers saw Ohnaka rubbing shoulders with the likes of Jango Fett and Aurra Sing and forging bonds with Jedi padawans such as Katooni.
In his post-Clone Wars journey, his humorous antics earned him a return in Star Wars Rebels, where he often tried to rally a new pirate crew and formed a friendship with Ezra Bridger. This camaraderie went as far as Ohnaka assisting in liberating Bridger’s homeland, Lothal. Beyond Rebels, Ohnaka made his presence felt across various other Star Wars media, such as games like Star Wars Battlefront 2 and LEGO Star Wars, as well as comics like Marvel’s Star Wars series and more.
Jumping into Star Wars Outlaws’ timeline, Ohnaka is crafting his endgame. Although he thrived in the underworld chaos of the Galactic Civil War, his prominence as a pirate captain waned for two decades. By 4 ABY, he founded Ohnaka Transport Solutions to channel his skills into transport services, operating in morally grey areas to support the Rebel cause. With A Pirate’s Fortune falling in the 3 ABY timeline, we may witness the steps leading Ohnaka toward forming his new enterprise.
A glimpse of the trailer hints at his cunning nature—perhaps aiming to outwit both Kay’s crew and the Rokana Raiders to seize Khepi Tomb’s treasures. True to form, Hondo Ohnaka might end up double-crossing everyone to realize his aspirations.
Fun fact: Hondo Ohnaka’s charismatic voice comes to life thanks to the renowned Jim Cummings, a voice actor with an impressive range of characters under his belt, including famous roles like Winnie the Pooh and Tigger.
Star Wars enthusiasts can look forward to engaging with these beloved characters and stories, with each new expansion bringing fresh narratives and cherished interactions that captivate both seasoned fans and new players alike.
