Sony has finally pulled the curtain back on the PS5 Pro after months of rumors swirling around, although it does come with a pretty hefty price tag: $700.
Promoted as a beefed-up, supercharged version of the regular PS5, the Pro’s price is bound to turn heads. At $700, it’s nearly neck-and-neck with the price of an entry-level iPhone 16, echoing Sony’s recent trend of pushing price boundaries—from paving the way with $70 video games to hiking up the cost of DualSense controllers.
Of course, this revelation has stirred quite a buzz on platforms like X (Twitter to those still getting used to the name change) and Reddit, where fans are quick to voice their displeasure, some going as far as labeling this as just another cash grab by Sony.
The major talking point for the PS5 Pro is its capability to maintain high-fidelity modes at a steady 60 frames per second, which, while impressive on its own, feels a little less groundbreaking when you consider the standard PS5 can achieve similar performance by dropping the resolution a notch. This raises the question: Are slightly better graphics really worth an extra $700?
For that amount, one could grab a custom PC with an RTX 3070 on Facebook Marketplace—or at least, that’s the route some of us might take instead!
The design choices with the Pro are also making waves. It does away with the disc drive, and, to add insult to injury, the vertical stand is sold separately. With this and a lack of major PS5 exclusives needing the Pro’s enhanced hardware, fans are left wondering if the upgrade is justified.
It’s worth mentioning that Sony boasts an impressive roster of exclusive titles such as God of War, The Last of Us, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and the recently released AstroBot.
All jokes about “PS5 having no games” aside, the Pro’s steep price and slightly odd design aesthetic leave many questioning whether it will be a success or another entry in the console war that doesn’t quite hit the mark. Only time will tell if Sony’s gamble pays off.
