Amazon US data shows that Quest headsets didn’t quite hit it big during Black Friday and Cyber Monday in 2024 compared to the previous year.
In 2023, around 170,000 Quest headsets were snapped up in the lead-up to and during the Black Friday to Cyber Monday period. Fast forward a year, and sales dipped to about 146,000 units—a 14% decrease. These numbers, however, are specific to Amazon and might not echo sales trends at other retailers.
It’s pretty surprising, especially since Meta had just rolled out the new Quest 3S, slashed prices on the Quest 3, and even dropped a hotly anticipated game based on the Batman universe, Batman: Arkham Shadow, right in time for the shopping frenzy.
Back in the 2023 holiday season, Meta was still pushing its older Quest 2 model. That year, the Black Friday deal on the widely popular 128GB version was a steal at $250, plus a $50 gift card thrown in, effectively bringing the cost down to just $200.
That bargain turned out to be more attractive than this year’s offer. In 2024, Meta pitched the Quest 3S 128GB model at $300, sweetened with a $75 gift card, making it cost about $225 altogether.
The price gap isn’t that drastic, and when you think about it, the Quest 3S packs enough bang for its buck to justify the $25 difference. But price isn’t the only player here; broader economic shifts, deals from competitors, and ebbing interest in VR play just as large a role.
This year’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday saw a sales ratio of about 3:1 between the Quest 3S and Quest 3, mirroring the sales dynamics between the Quest 2 and Quest 3 from last year.
