UPDATE: Oct. 11, 2024, 10:05 a.m. EDT We’ve included the latest information on availability.
The PlayStation 5 Pro is back in stock, and if you’ve been planning to snag one, now’s the time to jump on it.
At a price of $699.99, you can now preorder Sony’s latest mid-generation console from big-name retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, and Walmart. Preorders opened at 10 a.m. ET on Thursday, Oct. 10, marking the second chance to grab one after their initial release at the PlayStation Direct storefront two weeks ago. At the moment, it’s available again, although you’ll need a PlayStation Network account to purchase. Most stores are limiting customers to one console per order, but Target allows you to order two.
Your new PS5 Pro will start shipping in just four weeks on Thursday, Nov. 7.
Recently, Sony released two special console bundles to commemorate the PlayStation’s 30th anniversary alongside the PS5 Pro. However, they didn’t stick around for long.
The first bundle was the $999.99 PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Limited Edition. This set included a PS5 Pro designed in the classic ’90s gray reminiscent of the first PlayStation. It came complete with matching DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers, a DualSense charging station, a cover for a disc drive (sold separately), a vertical stand, and several collectibles. Limited to just 12,300 numbered units, this bundle sold out “within seconds” on PS Direct when preorders went live on Sept. 26, according to IGN. If you missed it, be prepared to shell out thousands on eBay, where scalpers have them listed at greatly inflated prices.
The other option was the $499.99 PS5 Slim Digital Edition 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Bundle, which didn’t include the DualSense Edge and charging station. After debuting for preorder on PS Direct in late September, it quickly sold out, mirroring its retail release on Oct. 10. Like its counterpart, this bundle has also found its way to eBay with hefty price tags.
The PS5 Pro was officially announced on Sept. 10 during a brief “Technical Presentation” led by Mark Cerny, the PS5’s Lead Architect, on the PlayStation YouTube channel. This unveiling came after months of rumors and leaks, including one that emerged from within Sony itself.
The PS5 Pro boasts a larger GPU than its predecessor, enhanced ray tracing capabilities, and custom hardware designed for AI-driven upscaling. Cerny highlighted it as “the most powerful console we’ve ever built.” It features WiFi 7 support, 8K gaming potential, and a new “Pro” version of the Game Boost feature, promising improved performance for over 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 titles. Plus, it packs 2TB of storage, doubling the capacity of the nearly four-year-old original PS5.
One thing to note: The PS5 Pro doesn’t come with a disc drive, so you’ll have to buy one separately for $79.99. IGN has noted the high demand, and stock is consistently running out at major retailers. If you want a vertical stand, it’s on sale for $29.99.
If the PS5 Pro’s price tag and associated extras are a bit daunting, you might consider going for a certified refurbished PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition directly from PS Direct, costing $399.99 and $349.99, respectively. These options save you around $100 compared to buying brand new.
The PS5 Pro is now the fifth version of Sony’s current flagship console, not counting any themed bundles. It joins the lineup alongside the PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, PS5 Slim, and PS5 Slim Digital Edition, following a rocky launch and supply issues in the wake of the pandemic.
