Phasmophobia, the hugely popular cooperative ghost hunting game, has been a sensation on Twitch since 2020. On Monday, the developers at Kinetic Games revealed that the title has surpassed 22 million copies in sales. Looking ahead to 2025, the team has an ambitious slate of developments lined up, including plans to revamp the appearance of its character models, which are, let’s face it, a bit generic at the moment. Here’s a peek into the updates we can expect later this year, as outlined in a recent announcement.
One of the year’s key updates is the “Chronicle” update, which was discussed in detail in a developer blog. This update aims to overhaul how players collect evidence—like those spine-chilling temperature drops and ghostly noises—and preserve it for the first time ever. This means the current Photos tab will be replaced with a new Media tab, perfect for when a particularly spooky encounter causes your group to freak out, bicker, or flat-out panic.
In addition to this, there’s going to be more depth in data collection. The first instance of capturing any media type will be labeled as Unique, offering substantial rewards when you wrap up a contract. However, repeating the same type of media will yield fewer rewards, motivating players to explore various tools and gather a diverse array of evidence.
After the Chronicle update, the Player Character Overhaul is on the horizon. Right now, players choose from a small selection of avatars that don’t exude much individuality. Looking forward, the roadmap hints at avatars donning different shirts, suggesting that players might soon get to mix and match outfits between missions. This would be a refreshing change from the current lineup of simple button-down shirts and other basic, forgettable attire.
Toward the end of the year, Kinetic plans to introduce a fresh map to the game. They describe it as small, reminiscent of the houses already familiar to players. Additionally, existing maps are getting a facelift. The Bleasdale and Grafton Farmhouses, for example, are due for significant updates, including redesigned layouts and new haunts. Kinetic has also hinted at holiday-centric updates for Easter and Halloween, and they’ve teased 2026 features, including something intriguingly called “Horror 2.0.” This definitely has caught my attention.
