When diving into hero shooters, my selection process has always been about picking the coolest character. Take Zenyatta in Overwatch, for instance—I don’t choose him for his healing abilities, but because his design is simply captivating. I intended to continue this trend with Marvel Rivals, initially drawn to NetEase’s renditions of Magneto and Venom. Their unique interpretations immediately grabbed my attention, making them my top choices. However, after checking out the studio’s latest developer diary ahead of the game’s release, my strategy has taken a turn. They’re introducing hero pick and win rates, which means choosing my favorites just got a little more strategic.
With the release of Marvel Rivals fast approaching, the game faces its pivotal moment. NetEase Games has dedicated considerable effort to crafting this Overwatch contender. While it boasts some of the most iconic fictional characters, simply having them isn’t enough to secure success in the competitive hero shooter landscape. That’s where Marvel Rivals stands out, with all heroes unlocked and available right from the start, offering players destructible environments and more.
But those features are just the beginning. A fresh developer video has revealed that Marvel Rivals will provide official hero pick and win rates, among other insights.
“In response to the many requests for detailed hero data, we have heard you,” says Marvel Rivals lead combat designer Zhiyong Feng. “We’re preparing to unveil the exact game stats for our playable heroes on our official website at launch, delivering a complete dossier for everyone.”
Feng continues, “We’ll also be sharing critical combat data, like win rates and pick rates, but compiling this information will take some time. Rest assured, we’ll collect the combat data diligently after launch and present these significant statistics when they’re ready.”
The pick rates will show how often different heroes are chosen in various contexts, while win rates will inform how frequently those heroes end up on the winning side.
Moreover, Feng mentions that the full launch of Marvel Rivals will add even more maps. Season Zero will introduce four new locations within the first month. We’ll explore two maps inspired by the intergalactic empire of Wakanda, namely Birnin T’Challa and Hall of Djalia, along with the Hydra Charteris Base and the symbiotic environment of Klyntar. Each map will feature dynamic elements, offering unique traversal and strategic possibilities, ensuring no two matches are alike.
NetEase has also shared insights into their ongoing anti-cheat efforts, which will be active alongside the game’s launch. Some beta players have already faced the consequences of these measures. Feng notes that cheats occurred in less than 1% of games during testing, emphasizing the team’s “significant progress” in detecting and curtailing cheating.
As we eagerly await the launch of this hero shooter, we’ve compiled all the need-to-know details about Marvel Rivals characters, as well as the anticipated release date for Marvel Rivals Season 1.
