Rockstar’s games have always held a special place in the hearts of gamers, yet VR adaptations have often lagged behind. Enter modder ‘Holydh’, who has taken a significant step forward by introducing a neat mod for the PC version of GTA: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition (2021), allowing it to shine on VR headsets.
The creation, known as the ‘GTA San Andreas Definitive Edition – 6DoF UEVR Plugin,’ enhances the Steam version of the game with full first-person VR capabilities and 6DOF motion controls. Unfortunately, users of the Epic Games Store or Rockstar launcher versions won’t be able to enjoy these advancements.
Drawing inspiration from ‘praydog’s’ Unreal Engine VR (UEVR) plugin, Holydh’s mod adds several unique features. Without it, the in-game camera automatically follows CJ’s actions. This plugin modifies that and goes a step further by including on-foot movements, vehicle driving (even a jetpack!), and offers options for camera comfort tweaks. Additionally, motion controller weapon support and functional sniper scopes make gameplay from start to finish in VR a reality.
For those eager to see this mod in action, Holydh has shared some impressive footage. The mod is available for free on Nexus Mods. To get it up and running with the Steam version of the game, a few steps are necessary. These include securing Praydog’s UEVR Nightly 01042 build, which can be found conveniently linked on the Nexus Mods page.
In terms of system requirements, users have reported smooth performance on NVIDIA RTX 2080s, but the mod offers graphical settings adjustments for those with older GPUs.
Even though this project is open-source and available to modify on GitHub, there’s a cautious note to be aware of. Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two, has previously been stringent about similar mods. Notably, in 2022, they took down multiple popular VR mods by Luke Ross for games like GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Mafia Definitive Edition. But unlike those mods, Holydh’s work is free from paid access, hopefully ensuring a smoother ride.
While fans might be waiting hopefully for an official release of GTA: San Andreas on Quest, that anticipation will have to stretch on as plans have been put on hold indefinitely.
