There’s nothing I crave more than a crossover between Final Fantasy 14 and Final Fantasy 7. The Square Enix MMO often feels like a celebration of the series, featuring events inspired by games like FF16, FF15, and the recent Dawntrail Alliance Raid drawing from FF11. Still, I yearn for Cloud and his crew to make their way to Eorzea, and I know I’m not the only one. FF14’s director, Naoki Yoshida, is enthusiastic about the idea, and now, with FF7 Rebirth’s director expressing similar interest, it feels like a true possibility for the future.
By now, Final Fantasy 14 probably nods to every game in the series in some way. I bet someone at Square Enix has discreetly tucked away an easter egg in a quest title or description, only to be discovered years later. These subtle references are a personal highlight in the MMO for me, and I’m always eager to see more.
Interestingly, a director behind Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth shares these sentiments, suggesting it’s just a matter of “when” rather than “if” FF7 elements will make their way into FF14. In a conversation with GamesRadar, FF7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi expressed his enthusiasm: “There’s nothing set in stone right now, but I think it’s a fantastic idea. Yoshida and I have a great rapport and trust each other deeply. We frequently meet to discuss the future of the Final Fantasy series. Given how well we collaborate, it’s likely that a crossover will happen eventually. It would be amazing.”
Naoki Yoshida has been vocal about wanting to collaborate with Final Fantasy 7 at some point, but he’s keen on waiting until the FF7 remake trilogy is complete. He believes this will allow both Square Enix teams to focus their efforts properly. Although we’ll need to be patient for the final chapter of the FF7 remake series, it’s worth keeping an eye out for the FF7 Rebirth PC release date.
I’ve long advocated for a 14 and 7 crossover, as my colleagues at PCGamesN know all too well. We might have Cloud’s Advent Children outfit to enjoy in the game, but there’s potential for so much more. Whether it’s starting an Alliance Raid series with Mako Reactor 1 or battling iconic FF7 bosses in eight-player raids, the possibilities are thrilling, especially if they include new mounts, weapons, and outfits.
The latest FF14 expansion wasn’t flawless, but my adventures in Tural left a lasting impression. I resonate with Ken’s review of Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail, particularly his praise for the dungeons, which are arguably at their peak. The storyline has hooked me with questions that demand answers.
