Many gamers eagerly anticipating the PS Plus Black Friday 2024 sale have found themselves less than pleased this year, as the deals they were hoping for seem out of reach. We’ve observed Sony’s growing trend of tailoring offers individually, which unfortunately means discounts are often received at random. Being passed over during such a major shopping event understandably isn’t sitting well with many customers.
Over on the PlayStation Blog, Sony has outlined that new subscribers can avail of a 30% discount on any 12-month PS Plus membership plan. Meanwhile, existing members who decide to upgrade from Essential to Extra/Premium or from Extra to Premium are in line for a discount, though details vary.
However, there’s a catch for those who simply wish to renew or extend their current subscriptions, especially Premium members who have no higher tier to shift to. These individuals find themselves in what appears to be a lottery system to access any discounts.
On Reddit, discussions from current subscribers reveal a mix of outcomes regarding discounts for renewing or extending memberships. Some, like myself, haven’t received any discount offer at all. As an Essential member, I notice a 30% discount is available if I choose to upgrade to Premium, and a 25% discount for moving to Extra. Yet, if I decide to renew my current plan, I have to bear the usual full cost.
While this situation is certainly irritating, it’s not entirely new. Sony has embraced random discounts for quite some time now, although they’ve become more pronounced with the increasing emphasis on personalized promotions.
