Aubrey Quinn from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) recently voiced her concerns over the impact of the latest U.S. tariffs on gaming costs. These new tariffs could lead to gaming becoming a pricier hobby, affecting everything from game launches to console pricing. Retailers, like those preparing for increased game costs, have already started feeling the pressure.
Players and industry experts have been worried about President Donald Trump’s tariffs for some time. Back in January, analyst Mat Piscatella warned of potential price spikes for both consumers and game studios, hinting that even the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 would likely see a cost increase. These predictions appear to be spot on, as Nintendo has already delayed the Switch 2 pre-orders in direct response to the tariffs.
IGN sat down with Aubrey Quinn, who described the tariffs as both “real and detrimental” to the gaming sector. The ESA aims to partner with the administration to work towards solutions that won’t burden U.S. industries, including gaming. Despite these efforts, the hefty tariffs might make gaming more costly anyway.
Quinn explained that the steep prices could reshape the entire industry landscape. With major gaming companies possibly seeing reduced profits, we could see less investment in research and development. This change might shift the next wave of consoles more towards digital-only models. The PlayStation 6, for example, may even eliminate physical media if physical gaming becomes too expensive.
As many current administrative officials are still getting situated, Quinn stressed the importance of building strong relationships with them to protect the gaming industry’s future. The concern extends beyond gaming—impacting sectors like food, fashion, and electronics. She noted that American companies, while based locally, still rely heavily on international products for manufacturing, which could complicate the situation further. Quinn advised gamers to reach out to their representatives, ensuring their voices are heard in this challenging scenario.
