Baldur’s Gate 3 didn’t just claim the title of Game of the Year for 2023—it emerged as one of the finest RPGs, and frankly, one of the standout video games of our times. Larian Studios has delivered a masterpiece; you could dive into this game as it’s designed without any tweaks and still have an amazing time.
But where’s the adventure in sticking to the script? Let’s be honest, it’s a lot more entertaining to get creative with your character—maybe turning them into a quirky Shrek lookalike or weaving in unlikely elements like Thomas the Tank Engine. Changing up the combat and gameplay with mods gives you the power to transform the experience—or at least tap into someone else’s creative vision via mods they’ve built.
Console gamers are finally getting a taste of the modding action. Hats off to Larian Studios for pulling this off, though even they can’t perform magic without constraints. There’s a limit to the modding wizardry possible on consoles.
In a recent video discussing console mods, Aoife Wilson, a senior communications developer at Larian, shed some light on these limitations. The studio faces a challenge with the number of mods that can be active in a single console save file while keeping Baldur’s Gate 3 operational.
As a result, console users are capped at 100 mods per save file. This is crucial information, particularly if you’re juggling gameplay between PC and console with cross-save. If your PC setup boasts more than 100 mods, those extras won’t make the crossover to your console, at least “for the time being,” according to Larian.
For those creating mods for both PC and console players, get ready for some extra steps. There’s a submission process you’ll need to navigate to bring your mods to consoles, as Wilson points out.
