Blade & Sorcery, a beloved virtual reality combat sim, hit a major milestone with its big 1.0 release in June 2024, wrapping up an exhilarating development journey. However, fans of Warpfrog, the creative team behind the game, have reason to be excited. They’re already diving into a new project that promises the same level of modding flexibility as their renowned physics-driven combat game.
While specific details about this upcoming game are sparse, Warpfrog has shared that it will be another VR title featuring the signature elements that fans appreciate — deeply immersive physics interactions and a focus on simulation. The studio has also assured fans that the new game will embrace modding just like Blade & Sorcery.
For context, Blade & Sorcery supports modding both manually and through tools like the Nexus Mod Manager. This opens up a world of possibilities, from simple aesthetic tweaks like adding extra sparks during weapon clashes to introducing entirely new maps and weapons crafted by the user community.
Back in October, while chatting with Meta, the folks at Warpfrog revealed that they are implementing a fresh framework for their next adventure. This decision stems from a need to push beyond the limits of the old framework, which was stretched to its utmost during Blade & Sorcery’s extensive early access phase.
“We had to tackle some spaghetti code and rethink everything from the ground up for a new engine,” Warpfrog explained. “We’ve initiated work on a new framework that promises increased speed for our upcoming game. This time, our goal is to have a framework tailored for the entire team, marking the first instance where we are crafting a project from start to finish with a full crew.”
Looking at Warpfrog’s growth, it’s clear why expectations are high. What began as a solo endeavor by ‘KospY’ has now expanded into a team of nearly 30 talented developers. The game’s transformation includes the introduction of ‘Crystal Hunt,’ a story-driven mode that turns Blade & Sorcery into more than a mere combat sandbox – it’s now a full-fledged adventure. The game features a complex narrative, an upgrade system, and a world that’s far more expansive and interconnected.
As Warpfrog shares in a Steam news update, “For the future of Warpfrog… this is where the real adventure begins. We’ve learned so much in the past five years, and we’re excited to unveil what we’ve got in store. Your support has been our backbone, allowing us to strive for even greater game experiences.”
