Available on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch, the latest goal of Fortnite is to face Godzilla and survive this epic encounter.
These days, my feelings towards Fortnite are somewhat mixed. I can’t help but recall its first exhilarating year with nostalgia—a time devoid of bots where every match felt like a whirlwind of chaos, comedy, and inevitable losses, challenging skilled and novice players equally. Those electrifying experiences have vanished, giving way to a less exciting arena where most adversaries are bots, offering little resistance and making it all too easy to win. What was once a mysterious and engaging narrative, open to player interpretation, has been replaced by quests reminiscent of MMORPGs and characters that narrate the story in a straightforward manner. Each week brings new characters from popular franchises, flooding the game, eroding its unique identity and transforming it into something that feels more like a corporate playground, reminiscent of Ready Player One.
Nevertheless, Fortnite retains an undeniable allure. The tactile sense of the terrain underfoot, the sheer joy of seamlessly running, sliding, leaping, and scaling its expansive map—these elements still captivate me. After a tough day, I often find solace in logging on, quickly completing three daily quests for some easy XP, getting pleasantly lost for a while. Let’s not forget Fortnite’s flair for spectacle; it occasionally pulls off grand, unpredictable events that very few games would dare to attempt. At the moment, it’s Godzilla, the king of monsters, potentially making an appearance in each match. I stumbled upon a video showcasing gameplay as the colossal creature, and it looks astonishing. The depiction of his immense scale and power is spot on. This weekend, I suspect I’ll be playing much more than usual, eager to experience the awe of his destructive might from the vulnerable perspective of a mere human, running for dear life from something that truly feels menacing. So, if you’re diving into Fortnite this weekend and happen to morph into Godzilla, spotting me as a tiny figure scrambling around below—have mercy! I promise there’s no harm intended. —Carolyn Petit
