About a year ago, I embarked on creating episodes of 3rd Party 64 focused on various Army Men games that hit the Nintendo 64. Around the same time, The Video Game History Foundation shared a festive Christmas commercial for Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes, one of the titles I was diving into.
This sparked a conversation with Frank Cifaldi, the director at VGHF. He mentioned a collection they had acquired from Michael Mendheim, the creative force behind the Sarge’s Heroes series. By the end of our discussion, my inbox was brimming with documentation on the development of the Army Men series, and the scale of my project had grown significantly. Fast forward to late summer 2024, Frank extended an invitation for me to join him on an upcoming episode of The Video Game History Hour. We were going to sit down with Mendheim to chat about his games, offering even deeper insights.
This episode of 3rd Party 64 showcases clips from that interview, along with findings from the documents shared by The Video Game History Foundation. It’s clear that the depth of coverage achieved wouldn’t have been possible without the invaluable work they do.
But that’s not all!
As I delved deeper, it became apparent that I was uncovering much more about Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes than could fit into a single video. So, I decided to create a spin-off video highlighting the nine most intriguing, previously undisclosed facts uncovered in my research. You can check out this video on The Video Game History Foundation’s YouTube channel.
