Nordcurrent’s latest title, “Chains of Freedom,” is a gripping turn-based tactical game available on PS5, drawing inspiration from notable titles like XCOM and Mutant Year Zero. Set against the backdrop of a dystopian Eastern European state, the game challenges players to command an elite military team under the Sovereignty’s directive. The narrative unfolds in a world disrupted after an asteroid collision brings EDEN crystals to Earth, transforming humans into ferocious mutant creatures.
The Sovereignty emerged as a beacon of order amidst the chaos, crafting a serum to shield people from these crystals’ adverse effects. Yet, not everyone buys into being immune, leading to upheaval. Some residents refuse immunity and rally to form a new regime. Having previously explored similar games, such as Mutant Year Zero on PS4 back in 2018, it was intriguing to see what new elements Chains of Freedom might bring.
Players begin by selecting from three difficulty levels—Story, Adventure, and Challenge. Opting for the Story mode allows you to dive deep into the narrative with fewer combat complications, while Adventure presents a balanced experience. Challenge demands precision and strategy, highly suited for seasoned gamers. In combat scenes, every turn is crucial, and allies must be revived swiftly—within two turns in Challenge mode.
As you navigate various zones, mastering character movement becomes essential. The analog sticks are your friends for moving characters and adjusting the camera. Should you need to hurry, R2 sets your squad marching faster, while X enables interactions with objects and NPCs. Choosing L1 and R1 lets you toggle between characters rapidly, whereas Circle accesses the inventory. Equipping your squad with firearms, bandages, and field rations is crucial, with each item serving its unique purpose. For example, bandages help heal wounds, and rations restore health and boost vitality over time.
Strategically, sometimes splitting your team can be advantageous, positioning members for an oncoming skirmish or reconnaissance. You can regroup your squad swiftly after a split with the Triangle button. When you’re ready to engage foes on your terms, initiation of combat can be triggered using Square.
Combat scenes unfold with players selecting character actions and movements, each costing precious Action Points (AP). Switching weapons or focusing shots can mean the difference between victory and defeat. Always monitor your AP usage to unleash potent skills when needed. Your team possesses unique abilities vital for survival; for instance, Fidel can deliver a punishing melee uppercut, while Corgan’s Overwatch skill ensures enemies crossing specific zones don’t do so unharmed.
Taking cover during battles can significantly enhance a character’s survival chances. The type of cover impacts evasion ability, crucial for dodging attacks. However, be cautious of enemies flanking your position, as indicated by a red cover symbol.
Explorations lend opportunities to gather crafting materials, producing items like ammo and health aids through a straightforward interface. As the game progresses, players can enhance their squad with EDEN Biocrystals, offering both benefits and trade-offs, enhancing combat capabilities.
Earning trophies is part of the adventure. From discovering hidden items to mastering combat mechanics like Corgan’s Overwatch, trophies reward creative and strategic gameplay.
“Chains of Freedom” provides an engaging blend of story and tactical depth, enriched by its sci-fi nuances. For those eager to experience a fresh take on turn-based strategy gaming, Chains of Freedom is now available for your PS5 enjoyment.
