Firaxis recently unveiled details about the upcoming Civilization 7 update, and it promises to be a significant improvement that fans have been eagerly awaiting. The update directly addresses some of the community’s major frustrations by allowing players to continue their game sessions beyond the Modern Age. Additionally, it reintroduces the much-loved Team Multiplayer mode from previous installments in the Civilization series.
Civilization 7 marked a fresh chapter for the franchise, dividing the gameplay into three distinct eras and reducing unnecessary complexities. However, not all of these innovations were met with the enthusiasm that both fans and I had anticipated, leading to some challenges with the game. Thankfully, the forthcoming 1.2 update, set to release later this month, seems poised to win players over.
One of the highlights of this update is the introduction of the One More Turn feature. When a standard game concludes at the end of the Modern Age, this feature allows you to keep playing, continuing to chase different victory conditions. Firaxis is also considering extending this feature to single-era games, allowing fans to enjoy endless play in the Antiquity and Exploration Ages.
For those who enjoy competitive gaming but want to team up with friends, the update brings back Team Multiplayer. This fan-favorite from Civ 6 allows multiple players to grow their civilizations together and compete against other teams, offering a shared path to victory.
A common critique of Civilization 7 has been the repetitive nature of map and resource generation. Firaxis plans to shake things up with ten new resource options and more varied resource distribution. “Key resources will remain consistent in each era to ensure smooth progress, but other resources will now offer more variability,” explains Firaxis. This revamped approach aims to make exploration, trade, and strategy feel fresh and distinctive with every game.
Additionally, the new Hemisphere Identity system assigns specific resources to designated parts of the map, introducing more unpredictability and variety, which will surely enrich the gameplay experience. Although previous updates attempted to enhance map dynamics, this one appears to raise the bar significantly.
The 1.2 update will also enhance late-game play by placing greater importance on Food, reducing the occurrence of disruptive natural disasters, and adding a ‘Repair All’ option to limit micromanagement.
Mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 22, when Civilization 7’s update 1.2 rolls out. Firaxis has also shared that they are still developing other much-anticipated features. These include Steam Workshop support, the auto-explore function, advanced game setup options, and more diverse map types and sizes, though they’re not yet ready for this patch.
