Speculation is swirling around the possibility of an Xbox handheld, and Asus has added fuel to the fire with a cryptic teaser on its social media platform once known as Twitter.
The short clip features an animated robot upgrading its systems at a terminal. Just before it completes the update, a mysterious gadget resembling an ROG Ally X gaming device and an ROG Raikiri Pro controller lands nearby. This curious scene concludes with the robot morphing into something that looks a lot like Asus’s top-tier handheld model.
Xbox upped the intrigue by responding to the post with the widely recognized side-eye emoji. This playful interaction hints at their secretive collaboration with Asus, known as Project Kennan. The ultimate goal? To blend Xbox and Windows gaming into a single powerhouse platform.
Despite keeping most details under wraps, the teaser gives insights into what this upcoming device might bring to the table: a revamped design, extended battery life, superior performance, and enhanced storage capacity are likely features.
On March 31, 2025, at 2 pm EST, Asus strategically shared this video, possibly to avoid any confusion with April Fool’s antics, which are common in the tech industry. With their previous successful unveiling of the ROG Ally on April 1 a couple of years back, this new development appears to be another genuine launch.
Interestingly, this tease comes just before the anticipated announcement of the Switch 2 at the Nintendo Direct event on April 2. While the Asus reveal might not sway die-hard Nintendo fans, it certainly captured the attention of PC and handheld gaming fans.
Though a new Xbox console isn’t expected until 2027, the introduction of an ‘Xbox handheld’ would be a thrilling addition to the gaming world. Let’s just hope it can run Xbox games directly without simply being a Windows 11 device dressed up in Xbox branding.
