If you’ve encountered an unusual glitch in Destiny 2 lately, no need to fret—Bungie’s decided to keep it around intentionally.
Games are unique among entertainment mediums, largely because of their bugs and glitches. You might find a similar vibe in live theater, where unexpected mishaps can occur, but it’s not quite the same because of how games function. Sometimes, these quirky bugs are embraced by developers. Take, for example, the game Celeste, where players discovered they could dash through single-pixel-wide gaps in certain spike walls. The developers liked this so much they added a custom animation to show when you perform the trick correctly. While Bungie’s not going to that extent with Destiny 2’s latest bug, they are welcoming it all the same.
Following the release of Heresy, some Destiny 2 players found that three exotic glaive weapons—the Edge of Intent, Edge of Concurrence, and Edge of Action—usually limited to specific classes, could actually be used across any class. As Bungie explained in a blog update last week, they’ve witnessed “some great celebrations with the removal of these constraints.”
Initially, Bungie’s instinct was to address the glitch to preserve class-specific gameplay elements. “For example, it’s a bit odd seeing a Warlock or a Hunter spawn a mini-bubble, or a Titan sprint like a ninja,” Bungie elaborated. Yet, after some team reflection, they’ve opted to let this glitch remain, illustrating a classic case of a bug evolving into a feature.
Of course, Bungie did point out that some animations might look a bit off since these combinations weren’t originally intended. Moreover, they mentioned that “class-based Glaives open up intriguing new avenues for player strategy.” They’ll be watching closely to see how these Glaives perform across all three classes moving forward.
Bungie also clarified that they “won’t always convert odd bugs into features,” though this particular case “felt suitable.” So, while it’s fun to imagine all future quirks will become permanent, don’t get your hopes up too high.
