In a strategic move, indie publisher Reforged Studios has added another notch to its belt by acquiring Yellow Lab Games, marking the third acquisition this year. While the financial details of this deal with the South African developer remain under wraps, it’s confirmed that Yellow Lab will maintain its independent operations, according to a report from GI.biz. Fans of their work won’t have to wait too long, as Yellow Lab’s rogue-lite RPG, Metavoidal, is slated for a Steam release in the first quarter of 2025.
This purchase follows Reforged’s recent acquisitions of Ground Shatter and Extra Mile Studios back in August, showing their aggressive expansion strategy in the gaming world.
Peter Van Der Watt, the CEO and founder of Reforged, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “Growing up in South Africa, I’ve always known about the incredible game development talent in the region. Yellow Lab Games caught my attention some time ago, especially after witnessing the positive buzz around Metavoidal, their initial venture into PC and console gaming.”
He added, “Since moving to Scotland to start my own game studio in 2011, I’ve been a strong advocate for South African game development on the global stage. Today, Reforged’s entire board shares my excitement about the potential in this region. So when the chance came to bring David Hecker, the head of Yellow Lab, and his team into our fold, we didn’t think twice. We’re thrilled to welcome South Africa’s top gaming talent to the Reforged family and are optimistic that this marks just the beginning of wider investment in Africa’s vibrant gaming industry.”
