Over the years, the Zelda timeline has sparked a plethora of discussions and theories among fans. Now, it appears Nintendo has officially inserted its latest entry, Echoes of Wisdom, into this intricate chronology.
Nintendo has slotted Zelda’s new quest into what they call the ‘Hero is defeated’ timeline, situating it after Tri Force Heroes and before the period dubbed the ‘Decline of the Hyrule Kingdom’. Here’s how Echoes of Wisdom fits into the timeline, according to Nintendo’s official account:
“The hero Link embarks on a mission to save Princess Zelda, who has been captured by Ganon. After a tense showdown, Link vanquishes Ganon but is unexpectedly engulfed by a mysterious rift. It felt as though he’d been snatched away… Throughout Hyrule, more of these strange rifts are opening, pulling inhabitants into them. No one is immune—not even the king and his advisors, who have also disappeared. Consequently, Princess Zelda must embark on her own journey to rescue her father—the king of Hyrule—the people, and Link.”
The official page further elaborates that this particular timeline originates from the ‘lose’ scenario in Ocarina of Time, where the Hero of Time is bested by Ganondorf. Conversely, a ‘win’ scenario leads to Link’s adventures in both the ‘child’ and ‘adult’ timelines.
Additionally, the accompanying images showcase that Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are set apart from this primary timeline structure.
Historically, Nintendo has expressed that Zelda timelines are only considered “to a degree” during game development. More recently, producer Eiji Aonuma shed light on this approach, explaining that gameplay generally takes precedence over storyline in this beloved series.
